WHAT
IS UNIFIED SPORTS?
Special
Olympics Unified Sport is a program that combines
approximately equal numbers of Special
Olympic athletes and athletes without intellectual
disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training
and
competitions.
Why
tell you this?
In
Lebanon County we are taking the next step to offer
additional chances for more athletes to move on in training
and competitions on the local, regional and state levels
by offering unified sports. Not all sports are eligible.
What sports apply for Lebanon?
Aquatics, Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Long Distance Walk/Run, Softball,
Tennis, and Volleyball.
What does this mean to you and your athletes?
We need partners who will make the commitment
to train
eight or more weeks, then move on to competition and
compete with their partner to represent Lebanon County
on sectional and state levels. The partners must
wear the same equipment and follow the same rules
as does the Special Olympics athletes.
Partners will be treated no different that the
Special Olympic athletes.
How
do you become involved?
They must complete a
volunteer form and have a physical form filled
out by a
doctor and submitted back to us.
Our
coaches are taking the necessary training to be
certified as a Unified coach, which means we will
be
able to offer the necessary training.
Does this
mean
we start tomorrow??
Maybe not, but we are taking
the next steps to offer as much as we can. Talk
to
your coach, this is at their discretion and their
availability to offer this in their sports.
